an offline word game, properly offline

plenty of games call themselves offline and still want the network for something. wordhoard keeps the letter dealer and the whole dictionary on your iPhone, so a round in airplane mode is the same round you would get on wifi.

a round played in airplane mode

where that matters

it matters on a long flight when the seatback screen is broken, and on the commuter line that finds every tunnel between you and work. it matters on the underground, at a campsite, and in the sort of village that has one bar of signal by the church gate.

what plays offline

everything. open play deals unlimited rounds with no connection and no account. the daily board deals offline too. the only part that goes online is posting your daily score to the world's top ten, and that can wait until you land. friend challenges pass the whole game between phones in a QR code, so a table of players needs no internet either.

why it can

there are no accounts, and no server the app has to check in with. a round is dealt, played and scored on the device, which is also why it opens straight into a game. the full story is at about wordhoard.
